Nanny Cam vs Baby Monitor: Which One Do You Actually Need?

They solve different problems. Here's how to tell which one fits your household.

Buying Guide · 5 min read

Parents often assume a baby monitor and a nanny cam are the same product with different names. They're actually built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one means you either overpay for features you don't need or end up without the one feature you actually wanted.

What a baby monitor is built for

A baby monitor is designed to be visible and always-on: it's meant to be seen, usually sits in plain view of the crib, and its entire purpose is a live audio/video feed so you know the moment your baby needs you. It isn't built for discretion, and it's rarely designed for long-term recorded storage — most stream live and store little or nothing.

What a nanny cam adds

A nanny cam is built to blend into a room rather than announce itself, and to record continuously (usually with loop recording) so you can review footage later rather than only watching live. It answers a different question than a baby monitor: not "is my baby okay right now" but "what actually happened while I was out of the room" — useful for reviewing a caregiver's day, not just checking on a sleeping infant.

Tell your caregiver

Even though the point of a nanny cam is to be visually unobtrusive, the ethical and often legal best practice is to disclose that recording may occur in your home — you don't have to reveal exactly where the camera is hidden, but caregivers generally should know monitoring is in place. See our guide to hidden camera laws for more on consent requirements in your area.

Form factors that work well as a nanny cam

Battery life and WiFi tradeoffs

If you want to check in live throughout the day, prioritize a WiFi-enabled model — but budget for shorter runtime between charges, since streaming uses significantly more power than passive recording. If you mainly want a record to review at the end of the day, a non-WiFi model with loop recording will typically run far longer unattended.

Compare clock, plug-in, and power-bank camera models side by side.
