Five practical checks, their limits, and what to do if you find something.
Most people never find a hidden camera. If you are worried about one, though, a careful 15-minute check of the room is a reasonable first step. This guide explains what to look for and what to do if you find something. No method is perfect, so treat each one as one piece of evidence.
Look at objects that face the bed, shower area or seating: clocks, smoke detectors, USB chargers, air fresheners, picture frames, power strips and tissue boxes. Look for a small hole where there should not be one, a lens-like dot, or an object that seems oddly positioned or does not match the rest of the room.
Switch off the lights and sweep a phone flashlight slowly across the room. A camera lens often reflects light back as a small bright point. Move around the room, because the reflection only shows from some angles.
Many cameras connect over WiFi. Log in to the router, or use the WiFi network's connected-devices list, and look for devices you do not recognize. In a rental or hotel you may not control the network, so this works best at home.
Some infrared night-vision lights show up as a faint glow on a phone camera when the room is dark. The result depends on your phone and on the camera, so a clear result does not prove a room is clean.
Radio-frequency (RF) and lens detectors are sold for this job. They can help, but they can miss cameras that record to a card without transmitting, and they can pick up harmless devices. Use them to add to a visual check rather than to replace one.
WoodySpy sells discreet cameras for lawful uses such as watching your own home and property. Recording people where they expect privacy is illegal in most places. See Is it legal to use a hidden camera? and our compliance page.
No single check can prove it. A careful visual check, a flashlight sweep and a look at the network together give you a better picture than any one of them alone.
Rules vary, but cameras in private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms are illegal in most places. Check the rules for your location or ask a legal adviser.
